Charity Bike Ride That Draws 7,000 Canceled Because Of Severe Weather

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — A big charity bike ride across New Jersey has been canceled because of the rainstorm pounding the state.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society decided Thursday to cancel its annual City to Shore ride from the Philadelphia area to Ocean City.

Organizers say they decided to call off the ride after Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency because of heavy rains and strong winds and the possibility of a hurricane bearing down on the shore.

The ride has multiple starting points and allows cyclists to travel up to 180 miles over two days. It attracts 7,000 riders.

It was moved back from its usual time in late September because of Pope Francis' visit to Philadelphia last week.
