Bradford: Offense Not 'A Long Ways Off'

By Ed Benkin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Eagles offense has looked like a work in progress throughout the early part of the season.  The players insist the work will soon pay off.

Despite a win over the Jets on Sunday, the offense has not been sharp and looks nothing like the offensive juggernaut on display in the preseason.  Quarterback Sam Bradford has struggled and has looked hesitant in the pocket, but Bradford says they are close to clicking on all cylinders.

"There have been drives and spurts where things have all come together and we've played the way we've wanted to play," said Bradford.  "I don't think it's a long ways off.  I think it's a small correction here or there.  I think that once we get in rhythm and get in sync, this thing can take off."

Bradford has taken his share of criticism in the early part of the season, but his teammates insist there is plenty of blame to go around on offense.  Chip Kelly also believes the offensive struggles have been caused by more than just his quarterback.

"It's a combination of everything," Kelly said.  "We've had some drops, but there's been some times where guys are open and we didn't put it on them at the appropriate times.  It's a combination of both."

Things won't get any easier for the offense this weekend.  Washington has the second-ranked defense in the NFL, and Bradford has been impressed with the way they have shut down opponents despite the team's 1-2 record.

"They're a good defense," said Bradford.  "Their front is active.  It seems to me that they get their hands on a lot of balls.  Their scheme isn't really complex but what they do...they seem to be really good at."

The Eagles defense is beginning to develop a swagger, and now it's up to the offense to follow suit.  The team believes it is about lack of execution instead of lack of talent.  Tight End Zach Ertz knows it's time to take advantage of what has so far been a host of missed opportunities.

"I think we are very close," Ertz said.  "Guys aren't stressing about it.  We know we'll have a very formidable offense when we get this thing going but at the same time, we've got to go out there and execute."

Linebacker Kiko Alonso will remain in Florida until Friday as he gets a second opinion on his knee injury. DeMarco Murray practiced on a limited basis Wednesday as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
