Chlamydia: A Dangerous STD Among Teens, Young Adults

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By KYW Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Chlamydia is not one of the topics that we talk about very often, but we should because it is a sexually transmitted infection that has a dramatic impact—especially on young people.

In fact, it is so common that the CDC says women under the age of 25 who are sexually active and engage in unprotected sex should be tested for chlamydia.

Chlamydia is not just a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to embarrassment. Left untreated it causes ectopic pregnancies and infertility in young women. There are no symptoms in 80% of women and 50% of men.

Now comes more disturbing news. It is also a big issue on college campuses and sexually active teens. In fact, an Emory University study found that freshman younger than 20 were nearly 70% more likely to test positive for chlamydia than students ages 20 to 24.

The message is clear: we need to talk about chlamydia and warn about its dangers.
