Officials Warn Residents, Pet Owners After 2 Raccoons Test Positive For Rabies In Radnor Township

By Dan Wing

RADNOR TOWNSHIP, Pa., (CBS) -- Officials in Radnor Township, Delaware County are warning residents to be wary after a pair of incidents on Wednesday September 16th involving rabid raccoons.

Authorities say the Radnor Township Police Department was called to a home on Gulph Creek Road, where a family dog killed a raccoon on the property. Testing showed the raccoon was rabid.

The Township's Health Officer says a second raccoon tested positive after being killed by a family dog at a home on South Devon Avenue the same day. The homeowner took the animal to a state lab to be tested for rabies.

Officials say identifying a rabid animal can be difficult as some may be aggressive and vicious, while others may seem timid or tame. They advise residents to avoid approaching any stray animals, keep vaccinations up to date for all pets, and keep lids on trash cans sealed tightly.

If bitten by a wild animal, wash the wound with soap and water before seeking medical attention. Any pets bitten should be immediately taken to a veterinarian.
