Camden County High School Students Fill Food Pantry Shelves In Honor Of Pope

By Kim Glovas

SALEM, NJ (CBS) -- As part of the pre-celebration of the pope's visit, the Camden Catholic Charities held a food pantry relay on Monday to feed the hungry in South Jersey.

High school students loaded $15,000 worth of non-perishable food items onto a truck in Camden, and then sent it to six food pantries in the Camden Diocese.

Joanna Gardner of Catholic Charities says there is a very real need for this.

"Hunger doesn't just exist in one county, it doesn't just exist in one city in southern New Jersey. It exists everywhere. We're in Salem right now, Salem, New Jersey, and many people don't realize it's one of the most food insecure areas of the entire region."

Gardner says this is about the Pope's message to help the poor in real terms.

"We hope that we inspire people to take a moment and really think about what he's asking of our world, and of the country, which is to give voice to the cry of the poor, to give voice to the voiceless. Those who struggle in out midst, to not ignore those people. To put a face on them and to see that face the face of Christ."
