Woman Killed, Man Injured After Being Hit While Crossing Delaware Highway

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) --- Delaware State Police say one pedestrian was killed, another seriously injured in a fatal crash late Wednesday.

Police say around Melissa Livingstone, 36, and Robert Spencer, 37, were trying to cross Rt. 141 around 11:30 last night when they were stepped into the path of a Toyota Corolla.

Police say the Corolla was being driven by a 51-year-old man.

The car hit both pedestrians, and authorities say Livingstone was thrown into the left hand lane. Spencer was thrown to the center of the road by the impact.

Police say neither pedestrian was using a crosswalk to cross the road. The driver, who was wearing his seat belt, stopped and remained at the scene. He was not injured.

Both pedestrians were treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Christiana Hospital, where Livingstone was pronounced dead.

Spencer is in the hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Police say alcohol use does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The accident is still under investigation.
