Budget Stalemate Continues, Montgomery County To Provide Funds For Programs

By Jim Melwert

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Montgomery County will continue to front money to programs that are reimbursed by the state, though county officials caution that could get more difficult come next month.

"Through the end of August we are approximately 21-million dollars short from the state," says Montgomery County chief financial officer Uri Monson, "essentially we're covering 21-million dollars."

With the current fund balance, Monson tells the commissioners the county can continue to float the money through September.

"Still enables us to meet our obligations, but as you said, that can't go on forever."

But October could be more challenging, though there's estimate what the numbers might look like.

Commission chairman Josh Shapiro says he's cautiously optimistic a deal will get done.

"It's out hope the legislature and the governor come together to get this budget deal done as soon as possible."

Examples of state funded programs include home delivered meals for the elderly, investigations into child abuse and neglect, restaurant inspections, and flu vaccine programs.
