Officials: Officer Justified In Fatal Shooting Of Armed Man In South Jersey

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- State officials say a New Jersey police officer was justified in using deadly force when he shot and killed an armed man earlier this year.

The finding was announced Wednesday by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, which had reached a similar conclusion after reviewing the January 25 shooting in Winslow Township.

Authorities say the shooting occurred when Winslow police responded to reports that 59-year-old William Campbell was holding a gun to a woman's head at a township home.

The woman ran up to the officer's cruiser, screaming about a man with a gun, and the officer saw Campbell approaching him while raising a handgun. Campbell refused the officer's demand to drop the weapon, and the officer eventually fired one shot that struck and killed Campbell.
