PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – You don't need a major study to realize that it makes sense to accompany senior citizens to the doctor. There are several reasons.
The first has to do with some differences in how people treat the doctor visit. Most young people are more aggressive and ask numerous questions about their health. That's a good thing. It engages the doctor in conversation. It also allows the flow of health information to go back and forth. This is of particular importance for senior citizens who have more health issues.
Many seniors are more inhibited about taking an active role in their own care and at this point in their lives it is very important to have a voice. The second reason has to do with remembering information. It's always good to have a second person around to communicate and remember small details like changes in medication or dosages.
It's important to know what an elderly relative is doing and taking a part is a great way to help out. If you have a chance to join your loved ones in a visit it might make sense.
