Southern NJ Family Stranded In Portugal After Twins' Premature Births Now Back Home
JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A southern New Jersey couple stranded for months in Portugal after the premature birth of their child is now back home.
A medical transport plane carrying Fred and Kim Kirzow Spratt and their daughter Hayden touched down Sunday afternoon at Teterboro Airport. The Jackson Township couple then headed to a hospital, where their child will remain for an undisclosed amount of time.
Hayden and her twin brother, Hudson, were born in May. They arrived 13 weeks early during their parents' "babymoon" trip to Portugal.
Hudson did not survive, and Hayden needed special medical equipment to make the transatlantic flight.
The couple originally was denied insurance coverage for the costly flight. But that decision was eventually reversed after the case received widespread attention.
