Officials Looking Into Dog's Death In Chester County

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A pit bull died this week after being transported to the Chester County SPCA, and now the District Attorney's office may be getting involved in the case.

The SPCA says animal control officers from Upper Darby Township brought the dog, named "Big Blue," into the shelter on Tuesday.

"We know that the dog was kept in the back of the van and we know that he was not given water at any point during that time," the agency's Micaela Malloy.

The dog was allegedly in the back of the van, with no air conditioning, for more than two hours and the outside temperature was in the 90s. Malloy says the on arrival, Baby Blue was gasping for air.

"When they took the dog's temperature, it registered at 107, but that is as high as the thermometer will read. Then it indicated that the temperature was too high for the thermometer to read it," said Malloy.

The dog died about 20 minutes later. An assistant DA will be reviewing the case and determine whether animal cruelty charges will be filed.
