Philadelphia Cyclists Forced To Put On The Brakes For Papal Visit

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you were thinking of using your bicycle to get around inside the traffic box security zone during the Papal Visit, you may have to put the brakes on that plan.

Within the 3.5 square mile security zone known as the traffic box, there will be several security entry routes and there is a list of prohibited things like selfie sticks, aerosols, backpacks, animals, except for service animals, and bicycles.

That is not sitting too well with many cyclists like Nick Manna of University City.

"I think that overall if there had been a little bit more heads up on this it would have helped. There has been a lot of speculation going on all over the place and if it was more organized overall and they would let people know a little bit earlier that would have definitely been a little more helpful," said Manna.

"It's hard to imagine with everything else that is happening that bicycle enforcement will be a high priority," said Dennis Short. "I think that for folks that are trying to get to work or conduct their business and do it by bikes, for the folks I spoke to, there is an assumption that they will be able to work around the system and get through."
