Should Women Lift Weights?

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We know that weight lifting is a great way to build strength and help with aerobic conditioning. It works well for both sexes, but there was a time when women were told not to life weights, and you can still hear many women say they didn't want to life weights for fear they would become too bulky to build muscles.

In addition, they were also told they would only lose it and have it turn to fat. That could not be further from the truth. First, when a person builds muscle, the muscle actually helps increase the basal metabolic rate or metabolism. In addition, lifting lighter weights with multiple repetitions helps build core strength. The important thing to do is make certain that you know what you're doing so you don't injure yourself. This applies to anyone lifting weights. You should also continue to keep aerobics as part of your workout. Weightlifting can certainly be a big part of your exercise.
