Cat Safety Collars

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It may be difficult at first to get your free-spirited cat to wear a collar but in the end it's worth it.  It could just save your cat's life.

With your phone number and information attached, it could mean the difference between your cat becoming a stray or having him/her return home safely. And some collars make all the difference.  Sometimes regular collars can pose a risk to your cat especially if they get snagged or caught onto something. It could mean the difference between life and death.

The best types of collars to use are breakaway collars and/or elastic collars. Personally I can attest to the breakaway collar that helped my own mischievous cat a time or two. Breakaway collars are preferred because they have a special clasp that breaks open when enough pressure is applied.  If your cat is caught onto something or in a dangerous situation, he/she can break away freely as the clasp breaks open. Elastic collars are made of stretch material.  This allows it to grow larger if he/she is caught onto something, allowing him/her to pull his head out freely and safely.  These two types of collars can keep you curious cat safe from injury but can provide the needed information on them to keep him/her close to home.  Keep your cat safe and healthy.
