Five Shows To See This September In Philadelphia

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Yes, the Pope is coming to Philadelphia, but can he sing?

September promises to be busy in Philadelphia, but before the fence goes up for a Papal visit, there's a lot of music to enjoy. Here are five shows to see in September in Philadelphia.

Saturday September 5th and Sunday September 6th – The Made In America Festival at The Ben Franklin Parkway

In its fourth year, Made In America returns to the Parkway with headliners Beyonce and The Weeknd. It will be the first Queen Bey set of the year, and the first from The Weeknd since dropping the near-lock number one album "Beauty Behind The Madness". Rapper Meek Mill leads a large pack of Philadelphia artist on the bill, like indie darlings Hop Along, Strand Of Oaks, and Waxahatchee. Plus Death Cab For Cutie and Modest Mouse checking the rock box. Did we mention Beyonce is going to be there? You can check out the entire lineup and schedule here.

Wednesday September 9th through Saturday September 12th – Dr. Dog at Union Transfer

Before there was a blossoming indie music scene in Philadelphia, there was Dr. Dog. For four nights at Union Transfer, the now veteran band returns to their earlier years for a theater experience that's tough to entirely wrap your mind around. Teaming with the Pig Iron Theatre Company to transform Union Transfer for a "unique concert that tunes in rare recordings, unreleased music, and even sounds from another dimension." Whatever that means, Dr. Dog will return to this dimension for a full concert taking place after each performance.

Thursday September 17th – Alabama Shakes at The Mann Center

Brittany Howard is a force of nature. The lead singer and guitarist of Alabama Shakes packs a lot of living into her voice and she comes alive on stage. The soulful rockers come to The Mann with some southern assistance from Drive-By Truckers.

Tuesday September 22nd - Motorhead at Tower Theater

Lemmy Kilmister and Motorhead are rock icons. After forty years, they're still just as loud and fast as ever, and they plan on celebrating their anniversary by kicking you in the ear at the Tower Theater. Seeing Motorhead at the Tower feels equivalent to riding a motorcycle through a decadent dining room, so its sure to be a can't miss performance. Anthrax is there to bring some noise as well.

Thursday September 24th – Madonna at The Wells Fargo Center

Hits and theatrics are sure to be on display when the Queen of Pop returns to Philadelphia. Early teaser footage from her Rebel Heart tour shows nuns on stripper poles, chiseled backup dancers, and bamboo cages. A couple of days before the Pope's arrival, the Material Girl is sure to cause some kind of scene. No fence required.
