Overnight Lane Closures On Route 42 Northbound Scheduled This Week In South Jersey

TRENTON, N.J., (CBS) -- New Jersey Department of Transportation officials Monday announced overnight lane closures on Route 42 northbound this week as the Direct Connection project advances in Camden and Gloucester counties.

Starting at 8 p.m. Monday, officials say three out of four lanes on Route 42 northbound will be closed to allow for the demolition of the old I-295 bridge over Route 42. Lanes will be closed Monday through Thursday nights as follows: 8 p.m. single lane closure, 10 p.m. double lane closure, 11 p.m. triple lane closure until 5 a.m. the following morning.

Officials say the following detour will be in effect for those driving on Route 42 northbound:

When all three lanes are closed, traffic on 42 northbound will be directed to take Exit 1B ramp to Route I-295 northbound.  Motorists wanting to continue on Route 42 northbound/76 westbound will use Exit 27, which is a left exit.

"Motorists need to be mindful of this week's closures on Route 42, which is one of busiest roadways in South Jersey," said Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works in a news release. "Throughout the 295 construction, please stay prepared for traffic pattern changes and be observant of instructions on the electronic message boards. Motorists will want to plan their trips over the next four days carefully reviewing these new closures."

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with Direct Connection, according to officials.

Officials say this work is part of the $900 million Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42.
