Julie Johnston Talks About Competitive Relationship With Zach Ertz

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Zach Ertz is entering his third NFL season with the Philadelphia Eagles. His girlfriend, however, is already out-doing him.

Julie Johnston, 23, a defender for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League, impressively won a gold medal with the United States Women's Soccer Team in the 2015 FIFA World Cup.

"I just pushed myself as hard as I could and didn't make any excuses," Johnston told the 94WIP Morning Show of her gold medal performance.

Johnston and Ertz met while in college, at Santa Clara University and Stanford University, respectively. Their relationship, as you can imagine, can get competitive.

"The most competitive," Johnston said. "Like we are huge card---like we play a ton of card games and we have to start writing the score down because I'm convinced that he cheats because our scores are always different at the end. I'm like, 'This is not true. I just won and I should be up by two.' So we have score sheet now.

"We do a bunch of stuff from whatever it is---volleyball, to beach volleyball, or whatever. Whatever it is it's extremely competitive. Sometimes we like don't talk to each other for like an hour, so we have to cool off."

Johnston was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and says Eagles fans set the precedent.

"I think it's amazing," Johnston said of attending Eagles games. "They're one of the best fans in the world. When I got to games, I mean that's really like how a football teams' fan should be. They are so into the game, they are die hard. It's unbelievable. It's so cool to see Zach be a part of it."
