Bethlehem Native Joe Kovacs Wins Gold In Beijing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Joe Kovacs punched his ticket to compete in the world champions during the final day of the United States Outdoor Track & Field Competition in June.

On Sunday, Kovacs, a former Bethlehem Catholic and Penn State track and field star, won the shot put at the IAAF World Championships at Beijing National Stadium, "The Birds Nest," in China.

Kovacs, 26 years old and 6'0", 276-pounds, defeated two-time defending champion David Storl of Germany. Kovacs' outdid Storl with a mark of 21.93 meters to 21.74.

Kovacs, a Bethlehem native, now resides in State College, PA and competes professionally for Nike.
