Reasons Why Dogs Are Fearful Of Caps, Hats And Beards

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As a canine behavior specialist, I am always asked these types of questions:   "Why is my dog afraid of my husband in a baseball cap?" or "Why is he barking at my friend who he knows whenever she wears a hat?"

For the first part of that, dogs are in total awareness of both the human and canine forms as well as other species forms but what they cannot discern, however is any removable parts such as hats and caps.  This is difficult for them to initially comprehend.  Add to that the fact that it very importantly hides crucial facial expressions and movement as well as eye contact, all of which they are conditioned to read prior to meeting.  They have no recourse than to react as if threatened.  This is also why they fear facial hair especially longer beards that may hide the face.

The best solution is to create small intervals in a safe setting with no distractions and allow the dog to safely sniff and discover the object first.  Desensitize by wearing it (hat, etc) periodically and creating a positive association with affection and treats after the dog sniffs it on his/her own.  Have the treats under the hat for him to explore.  Have her investigate it first. Wear it in short intervals and as the barking ceases, gently praise.  If more help is needed, seek the help of a professional.
