Federal Government Invests $1.9M In Job Training Program For Youth In Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- United States Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez stopped through Camden, New Jersey on Thursday to tour a job training facility that works with youth in low-income communities.

While at the youth build facility, Secretary Perez announced Camden is receiving a $1.9 million from the federal government to help teach job skills with 90 young people throughout the city.

"I've seen the energy in this community. You have all the building blocks for success," Perez said. "That's why this president invested in the promise zone, because this community has indeed so much promise."

The program allows participants to train and work with potential employers.

"I define success as making sure that everyone who is willing to work hard and play by the rules can get that chance to succeed, no matter where you start," Perez said. "That's what America is all about. we are a nation of second chances. we are a nation of opportunity."

During his visit, Secretary Perez also talked with youth, local leaders, and employers about the importance of working together to raise wages, and expanding paid leave.
