College Football Preview: Cheyney Wolves

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It has been a struggle for quite some time for Division II Cheyney University on the football field. Last year, the Wolves, who call the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home,  finished the season winless at 0-11. A loss in their season finale against Seton Hill was their 32nd in a row.

Here in 2015, the Wolves will have a new head coach at the top of the program, but he is a familiar name to Cheyney fans. Chris Roulhac will serve as interim head coach after spending several years on staff. This will be Roulhac's second stint at Cheyney as head coach, he also held the job for three seasons in the nineties, and he likes what he has seen so far in training camp.

"Things have gone very well," Roulhac tells KYW Newsradio. "We have stayed healthy, which is one of the big things. We're making a lot of progress and getting better every day."

For the last several years Cheyney had run the triple-option. Roulhac talks about the direction of the offense here in 2015.

"We'll run a little option, but we will be more multiple," Roulhac says.  "We'll run a lot of different formations, a lot of one-back stuff, all that kind of stuff. So we're going to be multiple, but we still will use the option."

No matter the formation, the Wolves will need consistent play from the quarterback position.

"We have two really good kids," Roulhac says. "(Sophomore) Dominick Trautz from northern New Jersey and (Sophomore) Anwar Mathis from Ben Franklin (High School) in Philadelphia. They're battling it out for the #1 position, but we expect both of them to play."

Roulhac feels his offensive and defensive lines are strengths right now. One of the veteran lineman on the offensive side is senior Michael McGlashen and he says the transition to Roulhac being in charge has been seamless.

"It's been a smooth move because we all knew Coach Roulhac," McGlashen tells KYW Newsradio. "I knew him since I was here as a freshman. He's a great guy, great coach."

Roulhac talks about trying to build a winning culture.

"I think it's a combination of things," Roulhac says. "The mental thing, obviously we get some wins under our belt and everybody begins to believe we can win. We've cut down our scheme to keep it simple so that we don't make a lot of mistakes."

For his part, McGlashen is hopeful this is the year the Wolves can finally turn things around.

"I've been here five years and that's all I've been wanting to do is change the program around and set a good stomping grounds for the new kids coming up," McGlashen says.

Are they close?

"Yeah, I feel like we're getting there," McGlashen says. "Feel like we're getting there."
