Local Organization Hosting Seminar On Transferable Job Skills

By Pat Toddy

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) - Whether you're a casualty of company downsizing, or looking to change careers, you can get free expert advice through a Delaware County volunteer support group.

"Joseph's People" is hosting the seminar on transferable job skills at Media Presbyterian Church this Tuesday night.

Volunteers at the organization, which has 14 chapters, have spent two decades helping the unemployed. President Cheryl Spaulding says that many long-time workers in this region are being forced to consider changing careers:

"Pharmaceutical used to be king in this area, pharmaceutical has cut back dramatically, so many people who were in the Pharma industry have to move into another field."

To make that move as seamless as possible, job seekers at Tuesday night's seminar will learn about transferable skills with HR consultant Joe Masek.

"He's actually going to work with people individually and help them identify what the skills were they had in their job," Spaulding says.

He will also show them how to make their old accomplishments relevant to a new employer, and help them remember qualities forgotten amid the stress of losing a job.

Anyone attending the seminar should bring a resume and can also receive networking opportunities through Joseph's People. The event runs from 7pm-8:30pm in the Hassler Chapel.
