Man Spends Night On Buoy After Watercraft Breaks Down
SANDY HOOK, N.J. (AP) — A man is safe after spending the night clinging to a buoy because his personal watercraft had broken down.
Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe says the man had left a personal watercraft rental business in Brooklyn, New York, for the Highlands in New Jersey when the craft was swamped on Tuesday night.
He was reported missing by relatives around 11 p.m. and an extensive search followed.
Rowe says the man said he swam to the buoy that was to the northeast of Sandy Hook peninsula. The watercraft did not sink.
Rowe says the man started swimming toward Sandy Hook after dawn and he was recovered by a Coast Guard boat crew on Wednesday morning.
Rowe says the man was taken to a hospital to be treated for dehydration and hypothermia.
