FINLAND (CBS) – Is becoming a father at a young age related to midlife mortality?

Researchers in Finland say men who became dads in their early twenties had shorter lifespans.

The study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health says men who had a child by 22 had a 26 percent higher risk of death in mid-life than those who fathered their first child when they were 25 or 26.

Researchers suggest the combined roles of parenthood and breadwinner could cause significant stress that affects a young man’s well-being.

Researchers conclude, “The findings suggest a causal effect of young fatherhood on mortality and highlight the need to support young fathers in their family life to improve health behaviours and health.”
