FBI Names Counterterrorism Veteran To Lead Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The head of the FBI's counterterrorism unit in New York has been tapped to run the agency's operations in the Philadelphia region.

William Sweeney Jr. starts this week as the special agent in charge of the Philadelphia field office.

Sweeney joined the FBI in 1998. He has also worked on public corruption in Newark, N.J.; led the Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York; and served as a special assistant to the FBI's deputy director at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Sweeney grew up in the Philadelphia area and graduated from Villanova University. He has also served in the Navy.

He succeeds Edward Hanko, who has retired.
