Scott Franzke On Hamels Trade: 'I Don't See How They Could've Done Any Better'

By Chris Stigall

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Phillies radio announcer Scott Franzke assessed the team's trade of Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers in a deal that involved pitcher Jake Diekman in exchange for pitcher Matt Harrison and five prospects.

Franzke told Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that, all things considered, they maxed out Hamels' value.

"When I heard about all the guys that we're getting back and the full scope of the deal, I thought to myself, I don't see how the Phillies could've done any better in the situation that they are in."

He said there is a reasonable expectation that every player acquired will eventually appear on the Major League roster.

"The total amount of talent could be uber significant. They feel like all of these guys have a chance to be in the big leagues some day, and it's not like a shot in the dark chance. Will they turn in to everyday players? Will they turn into significant pitchers? That remains to be seen. Part of it is up to the Phillies now. It's up to them in the minor leagues to keep developing, keep moving those guys forward."

Ultimately, Franzke believes the maturation of outfielder Nick Williams and catcher Jorge Alfaro will determine if this trade can be considered a success.

"The two hitters both have a lot of potential, but that's what it is, potential. They're prospects. They're still in the minor leagues. One of them, in the case of the catcher, Alfaro, he's hurt. He figures to recover, but from what I was told, I'm from there and have a lot of friends there, the ceiling, as they say, is very high. Does that mean they'll turn in to forever all stars? I don't know."
