Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Crab Feast Getaway

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  That rare summer treat known as a crab feast is gaining momentum as Chesapeake Watermen are seeing improving catches. But KYW's Jay Lloyd reports that a crab feast getaway is pricier than ever.

I have never seen Maryland steamed crabs on a Chesapeake Bay menu at $15 each. I did last week in Baltimore. They were jumbo, but so was the price. On the eastern shore, they were more reasonable, but still saltier than ever. Blame it on a slow local season that may be related to a colder than normal winter. We paid $55 a dozen for mediums, large were going for 70. And at that price if you're new to crabs, you don't want to waste anything. But Bill Weldon who operates the Waterman's Crab House in Rock Hall sees it all the time including a customer who didn't know where the meat was.

"He had the whole bodies left over. He didn't think he was supposed to eat that - just the claws," said Weldon.

He lost 90 percent of the crab. Just a reminder - at these prices, ask any server for a quick lesson in crab cracking. They love to pass on a Maryland tradition.
