By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are asking for the public to be on alert in North Philadelphia after an intruder allegedly beat a little girl until she was unconscious. She is hospitalized in stable condition at this time.

Special Victims Unit Captain John Darby says the five-year-old girl was beaten between Monday at 10 p.m. and Tuesday morning at 7.

The incident allegedly happened outside the family home in the 2600 block of Hutchinson Street. Darby says the little girl woke up in the middle of the night and found a man in her home.

"The male took hold of her, carried her outside of the property and there, physically assaulted her. She described stomping to the abdomen, and other physical assault."

Vyneeka Hopkins, the child's mother, says her daughter's injuries are severe.

"She has a hairline fracture in her skull. She also has a broken jaw to where she can't eat solid foods for six weeks, and she has a slightly bruised liver as well."

"horrifying. it's something i'll never forget," Hopkins said.

Detectives questioned at least one person, but they were later released.

Police have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood.
