Drake Continues Attack Of Meek Mill With Painful Phillies Memory

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Now that Drake has brought up the 1993 Phillies, are we all at war?

This time last week, Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill set off a hip hop feud with a tweet questioning Toronto rapper Drake's writing. Today it reaches a new level as Drake evokes one of Philadelphia's most painful moments.

"Stop comparing drake to me too.... He don't write his own raps! That's why he ain't tweet my album because we found out!" read the tweet from Meek Mill last week.

And so it began, a new war of words between two at the top in their game. It's not exactly the East Coast-West Coast battle of the nineties, but more of an East Coast-Great White North kerfuffle that's playing out.

It continued with Drake's associates weighing in and Meek Mill responding from the stage of his girlfriend Nicki Minaj's Pinkprint tour, of which he is a part of. A mild exchange of tweets and Instagram posts that made the Taylor Swift-Nicki Minaj misunderstanding seem exciting.

Finally though, two days ago Drake released his own answer to the charges leveled against him. During his Beats1 radio show, the MC debuted "Charged Up", a diss track aimed at Mill challenging his relationship with Minaj. "No woman ever had me star struck, or was able to tell me to get my bars up. I'm charged up" he raps.

Mill took to twitter again to respond by calling the song "baby lotion soft", which either means it's smooth and rash free, or not that good.

You need to know all of this to understand the importance of what happens next, and how we as a city are all now involved.

Without a rapping response from Meek Mill, Drake decided to lyrically hit him again by releasing another song Wednesday taking aim at Mill via SoundCloud. The track is entitled "Back To Back" and features the image of Toronto Blue Jays player Joe Carter hitting the 1993 walk-off home run in the World Series to end the Philadelphia Phillies season. "Back To Back" being a reference to that World Series victory for Toronto over Philadelphia, giving the Blue Jays their second title in as many years.

This has gone too far.

You can say what you will about a man's relationship or his ability to rap, but never, ever ever ever bring up Joe Carter. Baseball is sacred, and to reopen the wound that many of us still feel is an injustice beyond rap. It's an affront to an entire city.

We are all in this now, and should all collectively encourage Meek Mill to defend the honor of Phillies fans everywhere. If not for us, do it for Darren Daulton and Mickey Morandini.

Eagles wide receiver Josh Huff is all for a Meek response:

Mill is an artist that has always worn his Philly pride openly, and must know that hating Joe Carter is a part of it. So tonight, as the Phillies continue their series against the Blue Jays in Toronto, now must be the time to answer back.

Until then, the world waits, and a city relives one of its most crushing moments.
