Pedestrian, Struck Killed By Tractor-Trailer In Delaware

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash in which a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer in New Castle.

Authorities say the accident happened Tuesday morning around 6:35 a.m. on southbound US Rt. 13 (N. DuPont Highway) south of DE Rt. 141 (Basin Road.)

Officials say the 78-year-old victim was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of US Rt. 13 south of DE Rt. 141, when he stepped into the path of a 2001 Volvo tractor trailer which was being driven by John Davis, 60, of Westville, New Jersey.

Police say Davis hit the brakes and swerved to his left in an effort to avoid the victim, but the man fell into the roadway where he was then struck by the tractor-trailer.

Authorities say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials identified the victim as William E. Warren of Delaware City, Delaware.

 

The accident remains under investigation.
