Delaware County Retirement Community Hears Benefits Of Being Online

By Ian Bush

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- From putting information at your fingertips to connecting you with family and friends, the benefits of being online are easy to name. But not everyone is sold on the Internet. That's what a seminar on Tuesday addressed with residents at a retirement community in Delaware County.

(Sylvia:) "We were so used to doing everything by hand..."

To convince someone like Sylvia Friedman to try the web...

"I find the telephone is fine. My husband passed away at the age of 88 and never, ever used a computer."

...Try appealing to the side of her that loves a bargain.

(Linda:) "It's so easy to grab a deal, coupons -- it's right in front of you, and it's easy to access."

Linda Vertlieb is the blogger behind the local deals and events site FrugalPhillyMom.com. She gets that some seniors, like those here at Wesley Enhanced Living in Media, approach technology with a healthy skepticism:

"We got my father-in-law a tablet for Christmas, and he absolutely loves it. There are a few questions, but once he got started, he was like, 'I can figure it out on my own.'"

Something Lee Kugel has figured out, too, with her iPad:

"If I have a minute I go to my computer, and I find that I'm never alone with my computer. I play games, I do work, I do my bank statement."

Now, if she could only persuade Sylvia...

(Lee:) "I'm all for it, but some people don't want to adapt. Everybody's gotta do what they've gotta do."
