Chase Utley Wins Phillies Heart And Hustle Award For Sixth Time

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association announced the team winners for their Heart and Hustle Awards on Tuesday. Chase Utley took home the honor on behalf of the Phillies for the sixth time.

The Heart and Hustle Award honors players that demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game. The award is voted on by former players and is the only award decided using that method in the game.

Committees with ties to all 30 clubs are formed to determine what players best fit the criteria and demonstrate the values both on and off the field.

As the season continues, more voting will take place to narrow it down from the 30 team winners to determine what player will win the award for the entire sport.

The last and only Phillies player to win the overall award was Roy Halladay in 2010. Despite being the Phillies winner five times in his career, Utley has yet to win the overall award.

Utley's on the field production may not have helped him in attaining the Phillies award for a sixth time, but it is a testament to his reputation among fellow baseball players for his character on and off the field.

The struggles this season have been rather evident, but no one at any point has questioned Utley's heart or his hustle. If there is any award that suits this particular player, it is this one.
