New Nike LeBron Shoe Inspired By Student's Trouble Lacing Up

By Ian Bush

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- When Nike releases its latest shoe on Thursday, it'll be much sought-after on and off the basketball court. That's because it's designed for people whose disabilities prevent them from being able to lace up.

The LeBron Soldier 8 Flyease look like the kicks that King James would wear.

"He inspired us at Nike to bring something special for the masses," LeBron James has said. The Cavaliers star was talking about Matthew Walzer, who wrote to Nike about challenges he faces with cerebral palsy.

"I have flexibility in only one of my hands, which makes it impossible for me to tie my shoes," Walzer said.

But that's no longer a worry. As seen on Nike's YouTube video, the laces are more for show. Security comes courtesy a zipper that wraps around the heel and up to the ankle.

As the college sophomore slips his feet into the navy and yellow high-tops and zips them closed, he said, "I just felt this wave of independence that I never got to experience before."

The company's sending the shoes to two of the basketball teams competing for the US in the Special Olympics World Summer Games later this month.
