Police: Man Charged In Connection With Rape Of 15-Year-Old At Newark, Del. Motel

NEWARK, Del. (CBS) – Police have charged a Michigan man with a rape involving a 15-year-old girl at a Newark, Delaware hotel.

According to police, an investigation revealed the teen had befriended the 39-year-old suspect, William A. Burrows, through social media in November 2014, and the two had communicated until they met in person in the beginning of July 2015.

On Tuesday, July 7 around 3 p.m., the two were left alone in a room in the Motel 6 located at 100 McIntosh Plaza that the victim's friends and Burrows had checked into.

There, Burrows reportedly began inappropriate advances and physical contact with the juvenile victim, who was able to fend him off and leave the room.

On Friday, July 10th, the victim's mother began looking at her daughter's phone and discovered the text messages and call history with Burrows.

At one point, the suspect allegedly called the teen's phone and the mother answered, warning him to never call again.

On Saturday, July 11th, family members reportedly made contact with Burrows while he was sitting in the parking lot of the motel and told him to stop contacting the girl. Burrows then reportedly threatened to harm the two young adults with a box cutter-type knife.

Police were then contacted by the victim and her mother, and Burrows was arrested at 7 p.m. that night.

The suspect is now facing charges of Aggravated Menacing, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Rape 4th, and Unlawful Sexual Contact 2nd.

Burrows is currently being held in Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $93,000 cash bond.
