Philadelphia Zoo's Intermodal Transportation Center Picks Up National Award

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two years after its grand opening, the Philadelphia Zoo's intermodal transportation center has picked up a national architectural award.

The International Parking Institute selected an independent panel of judges to select the Philadelphia Zoo as one seven winners of its 2015 Awards of Excellence.

Awards Chair Tracey Bruch says the Zoo's intermodal transportation center was recognized for its many innovative features.

"The colorful animal themes, wayfinding and walkways, that was a nice feature. There was a visitor walkway that leads up to the zoo with some seating in a common area, that was also well liked."

For many visitors the best feature is the layout of the 683 vehicle parking garage.

"It's easy to park here versus anywhere else. You will always find a spot to park here versus like in the city, you're screwed."

Another visitor adds, "This is the first time that I come to this parking garage. Great. Coming in and I just find a parking and it's great!"

Zoo officials say the new garage has alleviated many of the parking and traffic issues they've had in the past.
