Women's World Cup Winners Honored With Ticker-Tape Parade In New York City

NEW YORK (CBS) -- Carli Lloyd and the rest of the National Women's Team celebrated their World Cup win with a ticker-tape parade in New York City Friday.

It's the first time a women's team has ever been given the special honor.

Eyewitness News was there for all the excitement.

This is called the Canyon of Heroes where the likes of Charles Lindbergh, Apollo 11 astronauts, and the Yankees have all been celebrated. But for the first time, an all-women's sports team, not one of the members is from New York.

It was South Jersey spirit taking over Broadway.

Tens of thousands cheered on the history-making U.S. women's World Cup team. Many Philadelphia-area fans got up before sunrise to see top scorer and Delran native Carli Lloyd.

"We got here at 7 a.m."

"Who else scores three goals in a women's World Cup final?"

"We love our Jersey girls we have four Jersey girls on that team so we are here to represent them."

By 11 a.m., the skies were a flurry of confetti as makeshift ticker-tape came down, the flags and the volume turned up.

The 23-member team rolled from Battery Park to City Hall, gripping their winning trophy tight.

"It was really exciting to see all the U.S. players and I'm really proud of them."

At a post-parade rally, Mayor de Blasio gifted the team a key to the city and of course, Lloyd gave a shoutout to her own.

"Well I'm a Jersey girl, Philly fan, but New York City, you guys are awesome."
