National Weather Service Confirms EF-0 Tornado In New Castle County, Del.

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) -- The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado touched down Thursday near Minquadale in New Castle County, Delaware.

The NWS Mount Holly says an EF-0 strength tornado touched down in New Castle County with estimated winds of 65 mph, the path of destruction was 1.5 miles from Route 9 to Dock View Drive.

"Could have been dead."

George Murray is happy to be alive after last night's thunderstorm destroyed the back of his mobile home – some material actually hit his wife who was lying in bed.

"She got banged in the head and I begged her to go to the hospital but she wouldn't go."

The Murrays live in one of eight units temporarily inhabitable after the storm which seemed to focus its fury on the mobile home village on Route 9 in New Castle.

Wind lifted the roof off a row of six apartments near the front of the community and threw debris hundreds of feet.

Chris Coviello says, "It grabbed the roof and peeled it off like a soda can, and threw all that debris against trailer number 35, which looks it shifted east about three feet."

The path of destruction continued across Route 9 snapping utility poles and downing trees. At the nearby Delaware River Industrial Park hundreds of concrete blocks litter the ground after walls blew down on the National Paper Recycling and National Roll Kote buildings.

New Castle County's Office Emergency Management surveyed the damage and took pictures to help the National Weather Service determine if a tornado possibly touched down.

David Scott, of New Castle County Emergency Management says, "Based upon my photos and their radar analysis and some computer modeling they may be able to get a better understanding of whether it was circular winds or straight line winds."

Delmarva Power says only about 15 customers are without power after a peak of about 1,400. No estimate on when power for those will be restored. As of 4 p.m., the National Weather Service in Mount Holly had not made a determination if a tornado touched down in New Castle.

The Red Cross continues to assist several families from the mobile home park.
