Phillies Sign 16-Year-Old OF Prospect Jhailyn Ortiz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies announced the signing of 16-year-old rightfielder Jhailyn Ortiz on Thursday night. Ortiz is a power-hitting prospect out of the Dominican Republic.

Ortiz is 6'3", 240 pounds and is ranked as the 6th best overall prospect in this year's crop of international free agents.

"We have been scouting Jhailyn since he was 14 years old," said Phillies Assistant GM Benny Looper. "Since that time, our scouts have gotten to know the family and have a strong conviction of not only his ability to play baseball, but his strong character and desire to be a Major League player. We are excited to add the power potential Jhailyn possesses to the Phillies Organization."

In addition to Ortiz, the Phillies added catcher Rafael Marchan (Venezuela), infielder Kuedy Bocio (Dominican Republic) and LHP Manuel Silva (Dominican Republic).
