PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Many people believe that creeping cholesterol levels typically go hand-in-hand with aging. But it doesn'thave to be that way, especially if you exercise.
In a a recent study, a group of more than 11,000 men without high cholesterol, heart disease, or cancer underwent regular fitness assessments. The study began in 1970 and, in the latest follow up, those who scored better on fitness tests at the beginning of the study had lower total cholesterol levels right away. They also checked in with less ldl or "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides.
As they aged, fit men's cholesterol levels stayed more favorable. That's compared with those who didn't keep in shape.
But here is the major message: don't stress if you've fallen out of shape. You can reboot your regimen at any time. Just start out slow and steady to reduce your risk of injury. And pick a workout you enjoy to boost your odds of sticking with it.
