Store Clerk Killed, Suspect Dies After Police-Involved Shooting In Atlantic City

By Cleve Bryan

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., (CBS) Authorities are investigating after a police-involved shooting in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

It was just the second day on the job for an employee stabbed to death Tuesday morning inside the Cedar Market on Pennsylvania Avenue.

"He just came back from Egypt, he was living in New York. He worked yesterday, and today, he just came," said a co-owner of Cedar Market.

Store owners say the 29-year-old Egyptian employee with dual U.S. citizenship was working at the coffee station when a man with a knife came inside and went berserk.

"According to my employees they say he just came in and went crazy," said a co-owner of Cedar Market.

Authorities say as police responded to the scene, the suspect, a local man in his mid-thirties, had a confrontation with police. They say a veteran patrolman pulled his gun and shot the suspect. He was later pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

"He's a customer that frequents the store."

"There is no rationale to that you know, sometimes.. I don't know, I don't know."

The police-involved shooting remains under investigation. There is surveillance at the store and Atlantic City Police wear body cameras so there should be several sources of video to help detectives piece together what happened.

Members of a local Coptic Orthodox church gathered at the Cedar Market to mourn the employee who doesn't have any family in the U.S.

"No family, but all these people come from one city so all these people are like one family."

Owners of the Cedar Market say they will help pay for the expenses to fly the Egyptian employee home so he can be buried with his family.
