Local Tech Company Raises More Than $1M For Its Real-Time Location Sharing App

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Frustrated by time spent on football game days on his phone guiding friends to his specific location, a Penn State graduate realized there must be a better solution. So he created an app to do it for him.

KYW Social Media Editor Melony Roy reports the company is getting a lot of investor backing.

MeetBall is a real-time, location sharing, navigation app. The Doylestown-based company has just finished raising $1.5 million in funding.

"MeetBall as a mobile platform built by fans for fans to improve the race and game day experiences at large events like NASCAR races, football games, concerts and festivals," said creator and Penn State alumnus Ryan Owens.

The Philadelphia-based Ben Franklin Technology Partners led the round of funding.

"It was a successful round and now we're going to use that money to expand our technology efforts. We expect to launch in early September, just in time for NASCAR playoffs as well as the college football season."

The app uses your smartphone's compass and GPS technology for outdoor events and Bluetooth-based beacon technology for indoor events, where cell service may be limited.
