Activist Groups Marched Down Broad Street Calling For Equality And Justice

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A number of activist groups came together Saturday afternoon to march for a number of different causes under the beat of the same drum – equality and justice.
The demonstration started with a rally at Broad and Erie to show solidarity with the victims of the Charleston, South Carolina church massacre, who Reverend Anthony Monteiro called martyrs.
"Because that church is a symbol of the struggle against slavery and now the struggle for justice," said Monteiro, "and against the flying of the confederate flag in South Carolina."
The march gained more demonstrators as groups calling for economic equality joined in.
Among them was Cherry Honkala of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, who said it's important they work together.
"Because all of us are a paycheck away from homelessness." said Honkala. "Many of us are struggling to put food in the cupboard."
Under police guard, the group marched to the Frank Rizzo statue in center city, which speakers called "Philadelphia's version of the confederate flag."
