Spears On Sixers' Plan: 'You Must Believe In Santa Claus And Easter Bunny'

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Marc J. Spears, an NBA writer for Yahoo Sports, is not a Sam Hinkie fan.

On Monday morning, Spears got into a heated debated over the Sixers' plan in an interview with 94WIP's Ike Reese, on the 94WIP Mike & Ike Show.

"I never believed in it," Spears said of the Sixers' plan. "I'm still confused by it. Now I see that Saric is not gonna be there next year. When you have a young team, man, you can't have guys that aren't playing. It's confusing to me. He trades a rookie of the year. I don't know man.

"You must believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny if you think that's gonna work."

Spears was critical of Hinkie and his draft picks including 2014 No. 3 pick Joel Embiid, 2014 No. 12 pick Dario Saric, and even 2013 lottery pick Nerlens Noel.

"Embiid hasn't played," Spears said. "Noel misses a year. Saric misses two years. What are you just drafting for names? Was Embiid hurt when they got him? Was Noel hurt when they got him?"

After Embiid's setback and the reported news that Saric could play two more seasons in Turkey, some fans are worried. Noel, however, who missed the 2013-14 season, bounced back and had one of the best defensive seasons among all NBA players in 2014-15 averaging 1.8 steals per game (10th in NBA) and 1.9 blocks per game (8th in NBA).

"Yeah, he lost a year," Spears said. "Let me find out who's injured this year so I can figure out who ya'll gonna draft. I mean it makes no sense."

As for Saric, Reese challenged Spears to give him a player the Sixers should have drafted instead.

"I mean, bro. I ain't got the list in front of my face," Spears said. "Saric is a great, great prospect if he actually puts on a jersey. He not even playing. You wasted two years on a guy that's not even playing."

"Well the guys that went before him are garbage!" Reese said.

"They're playing? Garbage is better than no garbage," Spears replied.
