Made-Up Trade: Sixers Get Pick No. 4 And Dion Waiters
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Joel Embiid's setback and Dario Saric's reported plan to stay in Turkey for at least another (maybe two) season has even some of Sam Hinkie's biggest supporters questioning his plan.
Have no-fear, Philadelphia, our made-up trade guru Ethan Giles is here!
With the 2015 NBA Draft just a few days away, Giles proposes this frantic draft night deal that would surely expedite Hinkie's plan and appease the impatient fans.
Before we get started, let's assume that Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor are the first two players drafted on Thursday night. Secondly, let's assume Hinkie believes both Kristaps Porzingis and D'Angelo Russel will be stars. Lastly, we will assume that the Chris Sheridan report about the Knicks looking to trade pick No. 4, if Okafor is unavailable, is indeed true.
Now, let's check out Giles' three-pronged, multiple team draft day extravaganza.
1. The San Antonio Spurs send pick No. 26 and Tiago Splitter to the Philadelphia 76ers for Choo Choo Maduabum
The Spurs want to chase free agents, keep Tim Duncan, and they need to get rid of Tiago Splitter's salary to do this. I don't like giving up Choo Choo, but it's a necessary cost. The Sixers can look to flip Splitter to a team that actually wants him later, for more assets of course.
2. The 76ers send pick No. 26 (from Spurs), Robert Covington, two second round picks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2016 first round pick to OKC for pick No. 14, Dion Waiters, and Steve Novak.
This deal allows the notoriously cheap Thunder team to shed both money and Dion Waiters. In return, the Thunder get a later first round pick, their own pick back next year (which gives them more assets), and Covington.
3. The Sixers send pick No. 14 (from OKC), the Los Angeles Lakers' 2016 first round pick, and a future second round pick to the New York Knicks for pick No. 4 and Jose Calderon.
The Knicks reportedly want to move back to get a guy like Trey Lyles (who could be available at No. 14), while adding future picks. This allows them to do that, and I could imagine Phil Jackson would love the Lakers' pick, just so he could take pleasure in the misery of his former organization.
