PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This is the time of year when it is very important to get the kids out exercising - please remember I am saying exercise not necessarily overscheduling.
Free play is as important and maybe even more important than team activities. And you want to make sure you get boys and girls out there exercising: girls are playing more sports in record numbers but research has found girls participate less than boys and they're also more likely to quit.
One of the key issues with girls and sports is recognizing the large role that social issues play. Most girls need a comfortable environment and if they don't feel welcome as a teammate or have a personal issue with friends a coach or player, they might shy away from participation.
Teenage boys tend to be less concerned about these issues or, if they have concerns, they tend to play through them.
Whatever the obstacles - encourage them to get out and play.
