Junior's, Iconic Maker of New York Cheesecakes, Moves Baking Operation to South Jersey

By Mike DeNardo

BURLINGTON, N.J. (CBS) -- A famous taste of New York City has moved out of its longtime home in Queens, New York.  Junior's Cheesecakes are now being baked in South Jersey.

For six decades, Junior's Cheesecakes were baked in the Maspeth section of New York City.  But since April, the company's main baking facility has been open in Burlington City, near the Burlington-Bristol Bridge.

"A real estate broker called me and said, 'This bakery is now available,' " recalls third-generation owner Alan Rosen (photo below).  "And I said, 'I'll take it.' "

Rosen says the Burlington plant is five times larger than the company's former bakery in Queens.

"We couldn't make any more cakes, so we couldn't open up any more restaurants until we had a bigger bakery," he told KYW Newsradio today.

But what about the taste?

"It's always been great, but I think our cheesecakes are coming out better because we have more baking ovens here.  So we're getting cold batter right into the oven immediately after mixing."

The new Burlington facility includes a retail store.
