Parents Charged In Drowning Death Of Infant Son In Bathtub

DEPTFORD, N.J. (AP) — The parents of an infant who authorities say drowned when his mother fell asleep in a bathtub for several hours have been charged with child endangerment.

Gloucester County prosecutors say the charges against 27-year-old Maurice Brown and 33-year-old Shannon Schonewolf stem from the June 8 death of their six-week-old son at their Deptford apartment.

Prosecutors say Schonewolf fell asleep in the bathtub with her son on top of her. When she awoke, the infant was unconscious.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities say both parents were charged because each had a legal duty to care for the child.

Bail was set at $100,000 each for Brown and Schonewolf. It was not known Sunday if they have retained attorneys.
