Police: Del. Man Accused Of Sexual Abuse Shoots Himself In Front Of Cops

BEAR, Del. (CBS) – Police in New Castle County say they are investigating sexual abuse claims against a 58-year-old man from Newark, Delaware.

Authorities say an investigation began early Sunday morning after investigators learned Bruce Durante, a volunteer firefighter and retired New Castle County Paramedic, had allegedly sexually abused a young child.

Police say officers responded to the 400 block of Lover's Lane in Bear to make contact with Durante.

Authorities say officers communicated with him via telephone and requested that he exit the residence. Police say Durante then exited the home with a weapon and immediately discharged the firearm into his body.

Officials say first aid was performed by officers on the scene and Durante was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say later into the investigation they became aware of another alleged victim who was sexually abused by Durante.

Investigators say the alleged abuse spanned from November 2013-March 2015.

Police are asking any additional victim to report the crime to the New Castle County Police by calling 302-573-2800.
