Firefly 2015: Philadelphia's Own Chiddy Bang

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This weekend at Firefly Music Festival, as you unpack your gear and set up camp in the Woodlands of Dover, look around and see if the guys from Chiddy Bang are in the sleeping bag next door.

"We gonna get in on Thursday, we gonna camp out for four days. When Friday comes we just gonna play a good show. A lot of energy," says Chiddy.

Philadelphia's own Chiddy Bang is taking the stage Friday night for the second time in the brief history of Firefly, yet he's still not above camping with the people.

"Yeah why not, you know. I'm trying to get involved and see what's up."

Originally from New Jersey, Chiddy Bang came together in the dorm rooms of Drexel University. From there, a show at Swarthmore College, a MySpace page, and an encounter with Black Thought of The Roots outside of 30th Street station helped take things to the next level. That's a Philadelphia Hip Hop fantasy.

"I actually just ran up on him because I was just so excited. I just ran up to him and was like, 'yo we just played our first show, check out our music.' I didn't even have any music to give him. I just gave him a MySpace link actually. He ended up going on that MySpace page and then sent me a message. Like 'yo I checked out your songs, I like it, here's my number.' It's just one of those crazy stories, I couldn't even believe it."

You can see Chiddy Bang play amongst the trees of Firefly Music Festival on Friday night at 7:45 p.m. It's a venue that's not typical for them, but it's exciting for Chiddy.

"It's a different dynamic, but it's a dynamic I always like, I always connected with that. Just because they're just music lovers and that want you to come out, they want you to just feel an energetic show."

Chiddy Bang is working on new music that will hopefully be out in the fall, and he's technically opening for Paul McCartney this weekend at Firefly. Not a bad 2015.
