900 Street Light Fixtures To Be Replaced With LED Lighting In Camden County

By John McDevitt

WINSLOW Twp., N.J., (CBS) -- Saving energy and money – that's the goal of a program in Camden County where LED bulbs will be installed at nearly 1,000 existing street fixtures.

Within minutes an Atlantic City Electric crew installed LED lighting to a street pole at Kali Road and Pondview Drive in Winslow Township. New hardware will be installed for the energy efficient bulbs at 900 fixtures along roads in six Camden County municipalities. Besides Winslow Township, other areas are Berlin Borough, Clementon, Lindenwold, Pine Hill and Stratford.

Freeholder Jonathan Young says a $800,000 HUD grant is funding the project and it's expected the municipalities involved will save an accumulated $100,000 a year.

"And just here in Winslow alone, Winslow Township itself will save somewhere around $28,000 per year through this program," said Young.

In addition to the savings, Camden County officials say the brighter lights will serve as a deterrent to vandalism and other crimes.
